Swiss Days History

In the center of old downtown Santa Clara the little run-down Relief Society Building lay in disrepair. It was one of the few remaining historic structures and was owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It came to the attention of some of the citizens that their intent was to tear it down and clear the area for additional parking space for the existing church house. Through the efforts of these people, the building was saved and purchased from the Church, but it would become necessary to pay for and restore it. A Santa Clara Historical Society was organized and the idea for a town celebration as a fund-raiser was born.

Clark Ence was City Councilman at the time and worked through the City with a handful of women to get the ball rolling. The whole celebration was done by this group of people.

The celebration included two parts. The first part, the activities at the park with 5-K Run, breakfast, kids booths, food booths, craft booths, Continuous Entertainment, games, races, ball games, etc... The second part was the Historical where we had our Opening Ceremony, Swiss Traditions, Pioneer Hands-On Experiences, a Historical Pageant, and displays pertaining to Santa Clara- It's people, business, history, etc.

Through the years the town has pulled together to make it a very fun and special time for the people who live here, those who want to come home to visit and for just anyone that might want to attend a fun down-home celebration!
